Why I Started Runoan: Independent Minds, Shared Goals

I started Runoan because I believe small businesses deserve access to practical technology without unnecessary complexity.
But I didn't start it with the idea of doing everything alone.
Runoan brings together independent thinkers and specialists who share a common goal: helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) find their own path through technology, AI and digital transformation.
Technology is moving fast. New tools and possibilities are emerging every day, but for many business owners, the challenge isn't a lack of options.
It's knowing where to begin, what actually makes sense and who can help turn an idea into something useful.
That's where Runoan comes in.
First, How Do You Pronounce Runoan?
Runoan is pronounced “ROH-nin,” like the Japanese word rōnin (浪人).
The name brings together two personal ideas.
Oan is my name. It's the personal part of the business, a reminder that Runoan started with my own experiences, curiosity and desire to create.
Rōnin is a Japanese term historically used for a samurai without a master.
What resonates with me is the idea of independence: being able to think for yourself, choose your direction and build something meaningful without following a predetermined path.
Runoan isn't a Japanese word, and it isn't about samurai.
It's my own interpretation of independence, creativity and the freedom to work differently.
But the meaning goes beyond my own independence. It also reflects the people I want to work with and the businesses I hope to help.
Why I Started Runoan
I've spent years working across business, design, marketing and building my own ventures.
Along the way, I've encountered the everyday challenges that come with running a small business.
A quotation that takes too long to prepare.
A website that doesn't explain what a company actually does.
Customer enquiries that require the same information to be entered repeatedly.
Tools that don't communicate with one another.
Small problems individually, but together they consume time, energy and resources.
As AI and modern development tools became more accessible, I started exploring how these problems could be solved differently.
I learned, experimented, built things, made mistakes and kept going.
And I realised something important.
You don't always need a big team or an expensive system to solve a business problem. Sometimes you just need someone willing to figure it out and build something useful.
That's why I started Runoan.
Small Businesses Need Practical Technology, Not More Complexity
Large organisations often have dedicated teams and budgets for technology and digital transformation.
Small businesses usually don't.
Business owners are managing customers, suppliers, operations, marketing and finances, often all at once.
They may know something could work better but don't have the time or technical resources to investigate it.
At Runoan, we want to help bridge that gap.
Sometimes that means rebuilding a website so customers can find information more easily.
Sometimes it's developing a simple pricing estimator, an internal tool or a more efficient workflow.
Sometimes it's helping a business understand where AI might genuinely be useful.
And sometimes, the answer is to simplify an existing process rather than introduce something new.
The starting point should always be the business problem, not the technology.
AI Opens Possibilities, but It Isn't the Answer to Everything
AI has made it possible for individuals and small teams to explore ideas that previously required far more resources.
That's exciting.
But adopting AI simply because everyone is talking about it doesn't make a business more efficient.
AI still needs good information, thoughtful implementation, security safeguards and human judgment.
At Runoan, we're interested in what AI can do practically.
Can it reduce repetitive work?
Can it help a small team accomplish more?
Can it make useful digital tools more accessible?
Can it help a business explore an idea without committing to a large development project?
Those are the possibilities worth investigating.
We don't believe every business needs to become an AI business.
We believe every business deserves the opportunity to understand what's possible and decide what makes sense for them.
Independent Minds. Shared Possibilities.
The idea of a rōnin resonates with how Runoan works.
Our collaborators are independent professionals, each bringing their own expertise, experience and way of thinking.
We don't believe every project needs a large agency or a permanent team. Sometimes, a business needs a designer. Sometimes, a developer, a strategist or someone who understands how AI can improve an existing process.
And sometimes, it takes a combination of those perspectives.
At Runoan, independence doesn't mean working alone. It means having the freedom to collaborate with the right people for the right reasons.
We bring together skills when they're needed, without unnecessary layers or complexity.
And just as our collaborators choose their own paths, we want to help small and medium-sized businesses find theirs.
Not by pushing a particular technology or prescribing the same solution to everyone, but by understanding where they are, what they're trying to achieve and what will genuinely help them move forward.
Independent by nature. Collaborative by choice. Helping businesses find their own path.
What We Hope to Build
Runoan focuses on practical digital design and development for businesses that want to improve how they work.
That includes:
- Websites: Creating or rebuilding websites that are clear, functional and designed around real business needs.
- Custom digital tools: Building estimators, internal applications and other solutions that simplify everyday tasks.
- AI and automation: Exploring where emerging technology can reduce repetitive work and support better decisions.
- Digital transformation: Helping SMEs identify manageable improvements rather than overwhelming them with complicated systems.
- Ideas and experiments: Testing new possibilities, learning from them and sharing what works.
The goal isn't to make every business more technical.
It's to make technology more accessible, practical and useful.
And we don't believe every project needs to be large or complicated to make a difference.
Sometimes, solving one frustrating problem can change the way a business works.
Sharing What We Learn
Runoan is also a place to document the process of building and experimenting.
Through Insights, we'll share practical ideas, lessons from projects, useful tools and questions worth exploring.
How can SMEs use AI without large budgets?
Which business processes are worth automating?
When does it make sense to build a custom tool rather than subscribe to another software platform?
What makes a website genuinely useful?
And what new possibilities are emerging for small businesses and independent professionals?
Some ideas will work. Others won't.
Some experiments may become useful products. Others may simply teach us something.
We don't want Runoan to be another voice claiming to have all the answers about AI or digital transformation.
We'd rather share what we're learning, what we're building and what we've found useful.
This Is Just the Beginning
Runoan started with my own curiosity about what technology could make possible.
But the vision has always been bigger than one person.
Oan is where the name begins. Rōnin represents the spirit of independence. And Runoan is where independent minds come together to explore ideas, solve problems and create new possibilities.
Our collaborators bring different experiences and perspectives. The businesses we work with have their own challenges, ambitions and ways of doing things.
We don't believe there's one path that works for everyone.
We believe in understanding where a business wants to go and helping it find a practical way forward.
Independent by nature. Collaborative by choice. Helping businesses find their own path.
