AI for business

Is speed your bottleneck? Where fast AI like Groq fits in a small business

Groq (spelled with a q, and not the same as Grok) is a company that runs AI models very quickly. If your business has 1 to 10 people, you have probably never typed its name into a browser. You may still meet it soon, because the apps and tools built for you can run on it.

What Groq is

Groq runs AI models on its own cloud, and other software connects to them. Its pitch is speed. It built its own chips for the job, and it now uses them alongside Nvidia hardware.

It is not a chatbot you sign up for and chat with. It is an engine that an app, or someone building one for you, plugs into.

What it can and can’t run

The main models Groq lists today are open-weight models from other developers, such as Meta’s Llama and OpenAI’s open GPT-OSS models.

It also lists a speech-to-text model, which turns spoken audio into text. If your business relies on one particular assistant, you won’t find it there at the time of writing. Check the list again before you decide, because it changes.

Does speed matter for you?

A fast engine only helps if speed is your actual problem. Three questions help:

  • Is a person waiting while the AI works, such as a customer in a chat window?
  • Does the task happen many times a day?
  • Is a wrong answer cheap to catch before it matters?

If the first two are yes, speed probably helps. If the task runs overnight, or once a week, a slower tool will do the same job.

Five small jobs to test

These are examples, not results from any business:

  1. A website chat that answers common questions straight away.
  2. Turning voice notes or recorded calls into text.
  3. Drafting a first reply to a repeat enquiry, for you to check before it goes out.
  4. Sorting incoming enquiries by type or urgency.
  5. Summarising a long email thread before you reply.

A person should read anything a customer will see.

Starting without a big budget

Groq has a free tier that needs no credit card.

It has rate limits, so it suits testing better than steady customer traffic. Pick one job from the list and run it for a week. Note what saved time and what needed fixing.

Before you connect customer information to any AI service, ask where that information goes and who can see it. This is practical care, not legal advice.

One thing to watch: suppliers change

In December 2025, Groq signed a non-exclusive licensing agreement with Nvidia and stayed independent.

It is a useful reminder that any tool can change direction. When someone builds something on a provider for you, ask how easily it could move to another. Groq offers an OpenAI-compatible interface, which generally helps.

Where we come in

We are independent people who build websites, tools and automations, improve existing ones, and help work out where AI is useful.
